In July 2008, the City of Seattle enacted a 20-cent tax on all grocery carryout bags (view ordinance). This means that unless you bring your own bag, the city – through this new ordinance – is forcing your local grocer to charge you extra for every bag that you use to carry home food for your family. $300 could be putting food on your table, but instead it’s going to create a new government bureaucracy. The City's own research shows that 91% of Seattle's citizens reuse or recycle their bags. Seattle is the only place in the United States that has such a tax. Research shows that in Ireland, where a similar tax was enacted, consumers ended up purchasing heavier plastic bags to replace the shopping bags they previously reused around their homes. Today in Ireland, they use even more plastic bags of all types than they did before the tax1.
This tax just doesn’t make sense for Seattle. A bag tax won’t help the environment, and it could hurt our economy, our businesses and cost our neighbors their jobs. At a time when economic uncertainty and the high price of food and fuel are burdening us all, we don’t need a tax on grocery bags. What Can You Do? The Coalition to Stop the Seattle Bag Tax is working to put the power in your hands by placing this issue on the 2009 ballot. Sign the petition to place this issue on the ballot. SEATTLE RESIDENTS: TO JOIN THE COALITION TO STOP THE SEATTLE BAG TAX, CLICK HERE. 1 Packaging and Industrial Films Association. “Imports into the Republic of Ireland from EU and Non-EU Countries.” 2006. (Note that Ireland's bag tax became effective in 2002.) More Resources and Links What is Yes on 1000? Washington is taking a progressive, humane step toward improving care for terminally ill adults. A broad coalition of physicians, nurses, hospice patients, family members, organizations and concerned residents have formed the YES! on I-1000 committee to launch the Washington State Death with Dignity Initiative for the 2008 November ballot. This measure will give tremendous peace of mind to terminally ill patients who face the prospect of prolonged suffering at end of life. What does the initiative do? This initiative would allow mentally competent, terminally ill adults who have six months or less to live the legal choice to access and self-administer life-ending medication. Eligible patients would have the option to make a voluntary, legal, informed and personal decision with their physician and their families, and with numerous safeguards to protect the patient from abuse. Patients in the final stages of a terminal disease would have the choice to end their life with dignity, on their own terms. Under current law, the government interferes to prevent terminally ill patients who face a lingering and painful death from making this humane, legitimate end-of-life choice. Under I-1000, the proposed death with dignity law, a terminally ill patient would be allowed to make a voluntary, legal, informed, and personal decision about their own body. Physician aid in dying gives terminally ill adults the peace of mind to know they are in control of their final days. When facing the prospect of agonizing pain, breathlessness, nausea and vomiting, or loss of dignity at the end of life, many patients achieve tremendous peace of mind if they know there is a safe and dignified alternative. Some terminally ill people experience intolerable suffering that cannot be alleviated, even by the most skilled palliative or hospice care. Patients should be able to make a legal choice to request, receive, and self-administer medication in order to die on their own terms. The initiative includes numerous safeguards for patients: - To participate, a patient must be:
- At least 18 years old and a Washington State resident - Mentally capable of making and communicating health care decisions for him/herself - Diagnosed with a terminal illness that will lead to death within six months (applies only to people with diagnosed terminal disease, not physical disability or age) - All decisions made by the patient must be entirely voluntary. - Two physicians determine whether these criteria have been met.
- The attending physician must inform the patient of feasible alternatives including comfort care, hospice care and pain control.
- The application process includes an oral and a written request, a waiting period, and objective witnesses.
- No one other than the eligible patient may administer the oral medication.
- The patient may revoke her/ his decision at any time.
The Washington initiative mirrors Oregon's "Death with Dignity" Act. Voters in Oregon passed an identical law by initiative over ten years ago. The text of the Washington initiative is based on the Oregon law, which has proved to be very safe and effective. The State of Oregon annually releases results showing that after ten years with a physician aid-in-dying law, terminally ill patients are benefiting. The State's data shows that the Oregonians who used the law were all mentally competent and terminally ill; all made repeated voluntary requests for assistance; and all had access to hospice programs. The 2006 statistics also reveal that many more terminal patients applied for prescriptions (65) than used those prescriptions (46). Peace of mind for the terminally ill is one of the greatest benefits of this law.
8月17日 Music Wednesday, 13 August 2008 Stroke the cause of Isaac Hayes' death Music legend Isaac Hayes, who passed away on Sunday, died from a stroke, according to US authorities. The soul legend's doctors listed 'stroke' as the cause of death on the singer's death certificate, although a post mortem has yet to be carried out, a spokesman for the Memphis Sheriff's Department said. Hayes had previously suffered a stroke in 2006 due to high blood pressure, according to his doctor.
The Oscar-winning star was found unconscious next to a treadmill at his home on Sunday and was later pronounced dead in hospital. His death certificate also recorded that there was no indication that Hayes had suffered head injuries or any other trauma. A memorial service for the star will be held at the Hope Presbyterian Church in Cordova, Tennessee on Monday. Yesterday his family issued a statement which said: "While he was an iconic figure to many, to us he was husband, father and friend. We will ever miss his love, wisdom, humour and the familiar comfort of his voice." Hayes won an Oscar for the 1971 hit 'Theme from Shaft', although in recent years he was perhaps best known to a younger audience as the voice of Chef from the hit cartoon show 'South Park'. His death prompted many tributes, from stars such as Gloria Gaynor and Aretha Franklin. Though Hollywood is still reeling from the unexpected double passing of two pop-culture heavyweights over the weekend, that hasn't stopped them from paying tribute to their late colleagues, with tributes for Isaac Hayes, who died early Sunday at his Memphis home from as yet unknown causes, already pouring in. Dionne Warwick: "I've lost one of my best buddies and it is not easy to reckon with…I know one can never put a question mark where GOD puts a period, so I will not question the Almighty's decision to call him home…He was my "family"…He will be a part of my musical life each time I sing the song "Déjà Vu" as this was a birthday gift to me from him…My family and I send sincere heartfelt condolences to his family for their enormous loss, and we will hold them in continuous prayer." Aretha Franklin: "It was so sad to hear about Isaac Hayes. So musically advanced and timeless in his compositions. He was loved and appreciated by so many. He was an enduring symbol of the struggle of the African-American man and was a shining example of soul at its best. God bless." Patti LaBelle: "I last saw Isaac a while back in Washington, D.C. at a concert where we were both performing. Although he was under the weather, he was still performing. He was the man—he had 'the show must go on' spirit. In his absence, he will be remembered through his great music. He will forever be in our hearts and souls. God bless his family." Neil Portnow, President of the Recording Academy: "Three-time Grammy winner Isaac Hayes was a true renaissance man—singer, songwriter, producer, session musician, actor, activist and more…his groundbreaking theme song and score for the movie Shaft cemented his status as a musical icon…The world has lost a true creative genius and a passionate humanitarian, but his indelible legacy will remain ever present. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and all who were inspired by the man and his music." Priscilla Presley, to Entertainment Tonight: "I am shocked. We have lost not only an incredible talent but a wonderful leader to his community and a dear friend. To me there will only be one Isaac Hayes, gifting us with years of performing, writing and a voice that penetrated deep into our souls. He is to be admired for changing his life around and standing steadfast to his beliefs, his integrity and to helping others…Isaac, you will be missed but never forgotten." Lisa Marie Presley, to ET: "Isaac was one of the more genuine and beautiful souls I have had the privilege to cross paths with and befriend in this life. He was an incredible friend. This is a tragic loss. My heart goes out to his wife and children. Wherever he is going to just became a brighter and more beautiful place, and I will miss him dearly." Sam Moore, Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer: "I owe so much of my fame and success to Isaac Hayes as it was Isaac who wrote, produced and actually invented what is known as the "Memphis Sound"...I truly know I was blessed to have had his presence in my life and career...Fortunately for us all, Isaac's talent will continue to be recognized and live on as a result of his enormous musical contribution." Bernie Mac 1957-2008 It is a sad, sad day in the City of Chicago today. I received a call an hour ago in Chicago that actor and comedian Bernie Mac passed away due to complications from his pneumonia. Mac was admitted into the hospital recently due to having pneumonia and the rumor mill had begun on various sites online that he had died, although none of those stories turned out to be true. Unfortunately today, the story is true. Bernie Mac suffered from a condition called sarcoidosis which is a disease that results from an inflammation of the tissues in the body. Over time, lumps appear and can either clear up or remain inflamed, causing scarring. Originally, when reports were first made that Mac was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, it was indicated that the pneumonia was not related to the sarcoidosis, but it appears that it may have been after all. Sources indicated for the Chicago Suntimes that he was "very, very critical". But recently as well it was expected that he would be released from the hospital soon. In 2005, Bernie Mac nearly died from pneumonia related to the sarcoidosis. He had lost a great deal of weight and was on an oxygen tank for a while. His disease has been in remission since that particular incident. Sarcoidosis can come and go at anytime however. Mac is best known for a host of shows and movies in addition to his stand up comedy. Some of his movies include "Oceans Eleven", "Head of State", "Life", and "Charlie's Angels". He appeared on such television shows like "Moesha", "The Wayans Bros.", and of coarse his own "The Bernie Mac Show". Setting Here watching the Mac show makes me relieze that heaven has got funnier now. Bernie had bless us with so many films over the years. - Old Dogs (2009) (post-production) .... Jimmy Lunchbox

5月19日 The price of Gas versus Printer Ink
All these examples do NOT imply that gasoline is cheap; it just illustrates how outrageous some prices are.... You will be really shocked by the last one! (At least, I was...) Compared with Gasoline...... Think a gallon of gas is expensive?
This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective to other things we buy. Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ... $10.32 per gallon Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 ..........$9.52 per gallon Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 .... $10.17 per gallon Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ......... $10.00 per gallon Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ...... $33.60 per gallon Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 ... $178.13 per gallon Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 .. $123.20 per gallon Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ....... . $25.42 per gallon Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 .....$84.48 per gallon And this is the REAL KICKER... Evian water 9 oz $1.49..$21.19 per gallon! $21.19 for WATER and the buyers don't even know the source. (Evian spelled backwards is Naive.) Ever wonder why printers are so cheap? So they have you hooked for the ink. Someone calculated the cost of the ink at............... (you won't believe it....but it is true........) $5,200 a gal. - FOR the thousands of compassionate caregivers who provide home-based care to people with AIDS.
- FOR a decrease in stigma and discrimination against HIV-affected individuals and families, which hinders efforts toward HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support.
- THAT Indian officials will recognize the severity of the AIDS pandemic and take more urgent action to help those affected.

: AIDS and malaria are among the greatest medical, social, and economic challenges the world now faces, together taking more than 3 million lives per year. The impact on children By 2010, an estimated 15.7 million children will be orphaned by AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa; globally, 20.2 million children will be. AIDS destabilizes families and entire societies, leaving children without the care and support necessary to grow up, survive, and thrive. In 2006 alone, AIDS killed an estimated 380,000 children under the age of 15.
Rita, 9, lives with her grandmother in Kenya. Her parents died from malaria; however, malaria was only the opportunistic infection. The real killer was AIDS. © 2007/Andrea Dearborn/World Vision And while AIDS is taking the lives of children at exponential rates, malaria is the leading cause of death for children in Africa. It accounts for one in five of all childhood deaths there. Sub-Saharan Africa remains hardest hit, accounting for approximately 90 percent of all malaria-related deaths.
Preventable, treatable Malaria and AIDS are truly diseases of poverty, afflicting primarily the poorest populations. Both AIDS and malaria are preventable and treatable; yet many die because prevention and treatment tools are not readily available to the people who need them most. Malaria and HIV interact HIV-infected people are among those most susceptible to malaria and most likely to die from it, as are children under 5 and pregnant women. And malaria has experienced a resurgence during the HIV and AIDS pandemic. There is increasing evidence that where they occur together, malaria and HIV infections negatively interact. Malaria worsens HIV by: - Increasing the amount of virus present in the bloodstream in adults and pregnant women;
- Possibly accelerating progression toward AIDS;
- Potentially increasing the risk of HIV transmission between adults and between a mother and her child.
Fighting AIDS and malaria Low-cost, simple interventions — such as bed nets, spraying, and community education — save lives. World Vision works with corporate partners such as the Global Business Coalition, Vestergaard Frandsen, Hasbro, McKesson, and others to procure bed nets, medications, health supplies, and other tools to fight the spread of malaria and aid care for the chronically ill. This past year, 500,000 bed nets were installed in homes in Zambia through these partnerships. In partnership with local community and church leaders, World Vision staff and volunteer caregivers regularly visit households where there are vulnerable children and/or people are living with HIV and AIDS or other illnesses, like malaria. World Vision has trained and equipped some 59,000 home visitors. In solidarity with these efforts, volunteers in America have already assembled more than 100,000 Caregiver kits, many of these at group events with their churches, companies, and other groups. The kits contain basic supplies that enable caregivers to serve their patients while protecting themselves from infection. Items include soap, washcloths, a flashlight, and ointments. Take Action for children affected by AIDS and malaria

 Send a message to your members of Congress. Ask them to swiftly reauthorize the Global AIDS, TB and Malaria Bill to ensure that children are not left behind in the fight against malaria and global AIDS. Our goal is to collect 15,000 signatures between now and April 20, 2008. Help us reach this goal!
The Global AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Bill America has established strong leadership in the global fight against AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria. In 2003, through the Global AIDS, TB and Malaria Bill, Congress funded the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (PEPFAR), the largest international health initiative dedicated to a specific disease — now representing a commitment of approximately $6 billion per year for AIDS prevention, treatment, and care. Authorization for PEPFAR expires on Sept. 30, 2008. In order to continue and increase the U.S. contribution to the global AIDS and malaria fight, we are asking Congress to take action swiftly to pass this bipartisan legislation. We specifically ask Congress to: - Support the dedication of at least 10 percent of the budget to be directed toward care for orphans and other vulnerable children.
- Support a designation of $5 billion for malaria out of the $50 billion authorized in the legislation.
Thousands in Sudan's Darfur region are still living in camps after fleeing violent attacks. Fatma Isaa Isaak, 37, is just one of thousands depending on World Vision's food aid distribution at the Al Salaam camp in South Darfur. April 2008 By Michael Arunga, World Vision Sudan, and Rachael Boyer, World Vision U.S. With her baby strapped to her back, Fatma describes her harrowing escape from an armed militia attack on her village. Photo ©2007 Michael Arunga/World Vision
At the camp, World Vision staff work tirelessly, distributing food rations from the World Food Program (WFP) to those in need. However, getting the food rations to distribute is becoming increasingly difficult. Recently, World Food Program trucks have become a target of violence. Armed assailants have hijacked 60 trucks since January and killed five WFP drivers during March and early April. Despite the challenges of increased instances of violence, as well as rising food and transportation costs, World Vision staff members continue to provide ongoing food distributions to more than 400,000 displaced Darfurians within this and 20 other camps in the region. Resources are constantly stretched as the fighting continues and thousands are fleeing their villages in search of safety. According to the United Nations, 2.4 million people in Darfur are displaced. That's one-third of the region's population. (View a U.N. profile [pdf] of the humanitarian crisis.) Since December 2007, World Vision has registered more than 18,000 new arrivals at the Al Salaam camp. Fatma — who was driven from her village after a militia attack — and thousands like her seek safety in numbers, food aid, and care that camps try to provide. Fatma's story Fatma was understandably distraught when she arrived at the Al Salaam camp. With a tremble in her voice, Fatma recounts how her family was scattered after heavily armed militia attacked their village in June 2007. "We fled from Kadaat village, which is over 300 kilometers [185 miles] away, after armed people attacked us four days ago," she recalls. "We were attacked very early in the morning, and I saw several people killed, houses burnt, and property being carried away." In the confusion, she was separated from her husband. "I [also] do not know the whereabouts of my elderly mother, who may have been caught up in the attack," she says, tears welling in her eyes. Thankfully, Fatma was able to gather all seven of her children before embarking on the perilous journey to the camp. Driven from their village, Fatma, her children, and about 200 others set out to find safety, food and shelter at the camp. Fatma and her children escaped on a truck driven by Abraham Adahi, who estimates that he carried more than 100 passengers and their luggage to the camp. "I had to use secret routes to avoid the danger of meeting armed militia, who would have killed all these passengers," Adahi said. "I am aware they do not want people transported into camps." During the three days of travel, most of the adults did not have any food. Thankfully, someone at a small market along the way sympathized with the children's plight and gave them something to eat. 'We need food' Al Salaam is the only camp within South Darfur accepting new arrivals. The other camps are already full and simply don't have the resources to take in any more of the displaced. With that in mind, Fatma is grateful to have a place to stay. "I am happy that World Vision has received us well, after the experience of being hounded out of our village. But we need food, water, health services, and shelter since the rainy season is here with us," she says, anticipating a long stay in the camp. Fatma registered with World Vision and received emergency rations for her desperate family. The daily rations consist of cereal grains, beans or peas, sugar, vegetable oil, and salt. Ten months later, Fatma is still living at the Al Salaam camp. Check back soon at www.worldvision.org for an update about Fatma's family. 4月13日 I was brought up with the old saying if you have nothing good to say about someone the say nothing at all. So normally I would not write a Blog like this one that I am writing today. But some times we do have to speak out against the unjust. Here happen to be one of those times. Now of days in the doggy dog day of the business world. Many big business are coming up with ways to rip of the general public. It bad enough when big cooperation are taking jobs away from the people here in America to have the work do oversea because of the cheap labor laws and all the slave labor that goes on in those countries. Now we have companies like Columbia House that rips millions and millions of dollars each day from the customers. Below is a copy of a review I posted today on Epinions.com and as I read some of the other bad reviews I decided to go ahead a blog it as while. I sign up for the Columbia House DVD Club like most people because the offer the 7 DVD for 49 cent. With the understanding that you had 2 years to buy 4 more at regular DVD’s at club price. Most will say this is a good deal even if they do over price many of the new release DVDs. Not long after I sign up for the membership the nightmare began. Like most people I hate getting junk mail all the time in the mail. So when signing up I ask to be put on the e-mail list to save on throwing junk mail all the time. It is easier just to delete all the junk mail on the computer. And most the time If I have no money or not planning on ordering anything I just delete them with out taking the time to read all of them. Like most people do these days as they keep getting tons of junk e-mail on a daily base. But the other day I got a letter from my bank telling me that I was over draft for a charge of 26.95 on my bank account. Which is very strange because I have never have a overdraft the whole time I have had my bank account. So I go online to check out the over draft charge and it was from a charge that Columbia House had made to my account. This was even stranger because I had not order anything from them at all. So now I had a charge for 26.95 plus a 30.00 dollar over drift fee on my bank account. So I call Colombia House to see what is going on here putting it nicely. The fact that I am being charge 56.95 now because of the over draft charge I was not happy at all about it. But then who would be right? The customer service person looks up the records and informs me that the charge is from what they call the Director's choice and the movie I am being charge for is some Bee movie of all things. The movie had not been sent to me yet but was box and ready for shipping. I told the lady I didn't not want the movie I had not ask for that movie and wanted her to stop shipping on that movie. And wanted them to credit that money back to my bank account along with the 30 bucks for the over draft charge I got from them. Is that not fair after all the debit my account with out my knowledge or consist. What she told me was even though the movie had not been ship yet she could not cancel the order and I would have to wait for the movie to get here and then send it back. Then once they receive the movie the would credit only the 25.95 back to my account. And that there was nothing they could do about the overdraft charges to my bank account. I ask to speak to a supervisor about this which she put me on hold for another 10 min. then came back to say all supervisor was busy and they would have to call me back. By the time I got off the phone with them I could spit nails I was so mad. I didn't get a call about to the next day and sure enough according to them the movie had been ship yea right. This happen on the 3rd of April and I didn't get the movie until the 14th of April. So by the time I send it back and they receive it and the credit to my account would be over a month later. This is a very shady business practice on the behave of Columbia House. Columbia House uses the Director Choice type of a deal to rip off there customers. I say this because the Director Choice is sent to you automatically if you do not contact them within a few days and tell them you don't want it. Columbia House knows because not all customers will be ordering movies every month and will never apply to selecting they are making for you. And if you don't apply and tell them no the can charge there millions of customers with millions and maybe even billions of dollars each month for movies they don't want and collect the bank interest on the money from those funds that they have took from there customers. Sure you will get the money back a month or so later after they have collected millions on the interest And hopefully you don't get an over draft charge like I did. But Columbia House makes thousand and million each month off interest from the money they took from you in the meanwhile. To me I feel this should be illegal and needs to be stop! If someone steals your bank card and make charges on your account it is bank fraud. So how is it that a company like Columbia House can make thousands and millions of charges on there customer account on a daily base. When in fact they have not ask to buy that product or knew these charges was going to be made on there accounts. Once again it is just wrong. Today more and more people do their shopping online. Because it is easier to do and they don't have to take the time or waste gas to go and get items they want to buy. But that like buy a movie from Walmart or some other store online. Then a month later they use you credit card numbers take money from you and deliver a sofa to you house. Then telling you this month they have online special for that sofa. Ok a sofa is way more then a movie but it the same thing. They would be taking money from your account and sending you something that you did not order with the reasonability of you to return it to them. It is still wrong no matter how you look at it it is wrong! That is why I am posting this now on here. I hope the people that read this and have had Columbia House do the same to them sign the comment and please leave contact information with it. I plan on gathering customer that have been rip off by this practice to bring a civil law suit against Columbia House in hope that it will force them to charge there shady way of doing business and ripping of there customers on a daily base. So if this had happen to you please leave a comment. I also would say you should also contact the Better Business Bureau and report there action. Thank You Robert 4月9日 1) Fold a NEW PINK $20 bill in half...

What a coincidence! A simple geometric fold creates a catastrophic premonition printed on all $20 bills!!! COINCIDENCE? YOU DECIDE As if that wasn't enough. Here is what you've seen... Firstly The Pentagon on fire...
Then The Twin Towers.
. And now .. Look at this!
TRIPLE COINCIDENCE ON A SIMPLE $20 BILL It gets even better!! 9 + 11=$20!! This is too interesting to pass up! Pass it on to your friends who have nothing to do.
Have a history teacher explain this----- if they can.
Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846. John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946. Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860. John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960. Both were particularly concerned with civil rights. Both wives lost their children while living in the White House. Both Presidents were shot on a Friday. Both Presidents were shot in the head Now it gets really weird. Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy. Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln . Both were assassinated by Southerners. Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson. Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln , was born in 1808. Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.
John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln , was born in 1839. Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.
Both assassins were known by their three names. Both names are composed of fifteen letters. Now hang on to your seat. Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.' Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln ' made by 'Ford.' Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse. Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater. Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials. And here's the kicker... A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe , Maryland A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe. Creepy huh? Send this to as many people as you can, cause: Hey, this is one history lesson most people probably will not mind reading!
